Mount Alvernia Retreat Center is a Roman Catholic Retreat Center, a ministry of the Franciscan Friars (OFM) of the Province of the Immaculate Conception with headquarters in New York City. The Center conducts and hosts spiritual programs for persons of all faiths, although its major focus is Roman Catholic spirituality. It has served the community since 1968. Located in the village of Wappingers Falls, NY, the Center has 204 acres of land overlooking the Hudson Valley in Dutchess County. Our Mt. Alvernia is named after the mountain in Tuscany, Italy--La Verna, which was given to St. Francis by Count Orlando of Chiusi della Verna to be used as a hermitage. The Franciscan sanctuary remains in use today. It is here that St. Francis received the Sacred Stigmata or the wounds of Christ.
